Hellen, a vocalist with a versatile voice who was nominated for the annual Eve Woman of the Year Awardhas recorded at least four albums in Dholuo, Kiswahili and Giriama (Mtawali's mother tongue), jointly with her husband - Mtawali and plan to release another Giriama album this year."We worked on the first album, Vumilia, soon after we met in 1996, which has several Giriama songs and some very traditional music," says Mtawali, who hails from Vitengeni in Kilifi."The next album will have a very authentic touch, but we will also add some modern instrumentation." Although Hellen did not win the Eve Woman of the Year award in the music and arts category, she says it marked a milestone in the growth of her musical career.She is a regular performer at the monthly all-night gathering of popular gospel music artistes at the Nairobi Cinema. Pastor Mugambi Muku, the director of the National Christian Youth Network and organiser of these monthly shows, says, "The audience loves Hellen, and that is why we try to have her join us every month. ... Hellen, an alumna of Daystar, teaches African and Western music at the privately-run university.She is not a stranger to the local music scene and has gained a following, thanks to her captivating stage presence and fluent performance in a number of African languages including Luganda, Kamba, Kikuyu, West African Pidgin, Chichewa, Zulu, even Arabic. An ardent lover of South African music, Hellen integrates a touch of it in most of her melodies.Being a performer, she also heads a music and dance troupe, Afrizo, comprising 25 Daystar students.He doubles up as a choir trainer at the university and several churches. .
