Meja Mwangi was born in Nanyuki in 1948 and educated at Nanyuki Secondary School. He then enrolled at Kenyatta University College (now Kenyatta University) but only spent two years of study there after which he joined the working world before eventually embarking on a frantic creative career. It was only much later, in 1990 that he went to Leeds University in Britain, after he was awarded a scholarship to pursue a bachelor’s degree in English. He, however, left the institution without graduating, apparently unable or unwilling to embark on the rigmarole of academics after already making a mark as a practical hands-on creative force. With a career spanning well over four decades, Meja Mwangi has gone on to establish himself as one of the most prolific of Kenyan writers, publishing novels, short stories, children's books and working with a variety of projects in film. His works have received awards in Kenya and abroad, they have been translated into several languages, and there are film versions of his novels.
